Who are we?

Fireweed Veterinary Hospital is a privately and locally owned small-animal veterinary clinic that offers full-service veterinary care. We provide preventative care, medical care, surgical care, dental care, behavioural care and senior pet care.

We are a values-based clinic, meaning that every decision we make is based on our core values. Everyone who walks through our doors is called upon to uphold these core values and is fully welcomed into our community. 

We live and work within the Traditional Territories of the xʷsepsəm or Kosapsum (Esquimalt) Nation and Songhees Nation.

No, we are privately and locally owned. Dr. Roberts, our founder and veterinarian, lives in Esquimalt. 

We haven’t opened our booking portal yet. When we open it in early October, we will send out a notification to our Client List and post it on social media, so make sure to join the list or follow us on Instagram and Facebook if you’d like to be notified.

We are primarily a cat and dog clinic. Dr. Chloe will do her best to meet community needs for other small mammals when there is no specialist available, but we do not have a specialist on staff and we aren’t equipped to see birds at the moment.  

Yes! We have three parking spots available in the lot out front of the clinic and five more under the building.

Yes! While we are starting as a small team with only one veterinarian, our space can support as many as four full-time veterinarians in the future. It’s important to us that we grow the clinic in sustainable ways that meet the needs of the community while also maintaining strong quality of care and avoiding staff burnout. Once we have established a strong foundation and community, we will begin to explore adding members to our team. 

While we aren’t accepting direct donations to our Robin Hood Fund at the moment, we are in the process of exploring the best way to accept and distribute funds. Our Robin Hood Fund helps support patients in receiving emergency veterinary care when finances become a barrier.

Esquimalt is a special and uniquely closeknit community, making it the perfect place to open a vet clinic focused on accessible, inclusive, and flexible care. While there are awesome privately owned vet clinics nearby (like Vic West Pet Hospital), Fireweed Veterinary Hospital is the only clinic located within the boundaries of Esquimalt township.

Why Fireweed?

The fireweed plant is one of the first plants to emerge after a forest fire. As such, it often represents new growth and strength, especially for many First Nations communities. Its growth allows for the return of other life to a burned area by preventing further damage to the land and providing protection for young plants and food for animals.

Our clinic is named after this resilient plant in recognition of our hopes to move towards a new way of providing veterinary care by centring our core values, prioritizing community wellbeing, and advancing reconciliation. With our growth, we hope that we can motivate change within the veterinary profession as a whole.

An amazing local artist, Kayanne (sageartistry.ca), has created a beautiful piece of art for the clinic. She is a mixed-ancestry Métis artist whose unique style heavily features floral motifs that resemble traditional Métis beadwork.

“I am incredibly honoured to have been asked to create this art piece for Fireweed Veterinary Clinic,” Kayanne said. “I am an avid animal lover and am overjoyed to know that this piece will be in a clinic that makes a difference in so many lives.”

Core Values

Fireweed Veterinary Hospital was founded on the core principle of providing family-centered and context-dependent veterinary medical, surgical, and behavioural care to all pet families.

Isolation, judgement and poor communication can create barriers to pet care. A safe and inclusive space is our goal. For this reason, we aim to approach the practice of veterinary medicine from a judgement-free and anti-racist lens, providing accessible, trauma-informed, and contextualized support to our team members, our patients, and their families. 

We seek to provide veterinary care that meets the needs and goals of each individual pet-family. We understand that every pet and every pet-family is different and will benefit from a unique and contextualized approach to care.

Coming into our clinic should be as low stress as possible for your pet and for all members of the pet-family. We aim to create a comfortable, clean and calm environment while ensuring that our approach to care prioritizes the overall wellbeing of our patients, clients and staff. 

Our goal is to create a safe space for everyone who enters our clinic. All our staff are empowered to listen, to learn and to be empathetic. We want to foster a community that is compassionate and respectful.

We truly embrace the idea that there is always more to learn. We are committed to providing accessible pet-health education to our clients, encouraging learning within our community and prioritizing staff growth and development.

We believe that pet health is deeply connected to community health. In acknowledgement of this, our goal is to partner with human-health services, support traditional and land-based knowledge, and minimize our environmental footprint to prioritize a truly one-health model.
